3 weeks has flown by but I have made some progress and the pattern is beginning to take shape on the back side of this Goodwill find. I have totally abandoned the quilt stand for hoop and lap.
Because this quilt project is so large and massive I am almost embarassed to write that I have the corners wound up and bound with pony tail hair bands…
I have never been a fan of purple but this ‘winter quilt project’ is taking me into spring and I am falling in love with the purple square centers of of the wedding ring blooms.
3 weeks for each update posting and in 3 weeks and I will be retiring from 20 years working at one of our local high schools as a para educator in special education coupled with an additional 10 years as a special needs para at the elementary level.

Congrats, Sharon, on your 30 years of helping kids learn! It’s nice that you have a large handwork project to assist you in the transition period, or do you have some other spectacular celebration plans? Is there a new career on the horizon, or an opportunity to focus on other passions?

Thank you Kathy~ No 2nd career or spectacular plans other than focusing on my passions for now. I would love to learn how to weave so that is on the back burner 🙂 for now it’s all about the quilt!

Your quilt is so pretty–and, even though I’m not a fan of purple, I do think those center blocks make the quilt! And are those crocuses in bloom right now?? I’ve been retired for about 7 years and I think you’re going to love it. I loved my job but, some days, I feel like that was a whole different life . . . and my life now is so fulfilling, with time for quilting and, yes, weaving!!

I had a quilt stand too, but I agree with you that it is easier to use a hoop. I am continually turning the quilt and it is much easier in your lap. Plus it keep you warmer. Good work!

Congratulations on your up-coming retirement. Bittersweet, I’m sure. I love my three para educators that worked with me when I was teaching – could not have done it without them! Your quilting is going great. Are you doing any kind of quilting in the negative space? I have never quilted a double wedding ring but all that negative space gets me all excited! You are controlling a beast of a quilt with hair ties…whatever works and totally sounds like someone who works in SpEd!!

Thank you Susan! LOL, you totally get it, SpEd + hair ties. I have not thought of the negative space and if I will do anything with it, but you’ve given me something to think about now. Hmmmm you’ve really got me thinking now.

Congratulations on your upcoming retirement, and on 30 years of serving children who have needed you. Time does fly by, doesn’t it? I retired early, but it’s still be 13 years this May, and that seems completely impossible! Your quilt is a beauty. I think the pony tail bands are a wonderful way to keep the quilt confined where you want it.
