It’s check in time and I was actually anxious for this 3 week period to arrive. I made some great head way on my cactus and owl cross-stitch. Here is where I was at our last check in – a hint of the owl was showing.
ta daaaaa Owl is done and backstitching started
I wasn’t happy with the choppiness of the backstitching on the flower so I am going to try redoing it. Backstitching the owls head I realized once I got started that I had used double thread when single was called for. I wrestled with taking it out and then decided it will be fine. I think it gives a bit of depth to the head sitting on the body so I will leave it as is.
Remember the Barbara Lavalle cross-stitch I was working on for gift giving to my daughter up in Alaska?
Finished, framed and on its way
I was really pleased with the framing that I had done at the local Joannes. I’m sorry I didn’t get a better picture that showed the black frame all around * dark frame light background 🙂 With the present in route already, I had my daughter swear an oath to wait for opening.
Birthday celebration on the 25th.
Thank you for stopping by. Please take a moment to visit the pages of the other amazing crafters in the group. And if you would like to join along please contact Avis below and she will be happy to walk you through the process. See you next time 🙂
About the SAL
This SAL (Stitch Along) is slightly different to other SALs in that we don’t all stitch the same design at the same rate. We choose ONE unfinished project, or ONE new one, and show progress of its completion over a series of three weekly updates. There are no deadlines and no set amount to stitch. The result is that the space in our drawers full of WIPs (works in progress) is gradually being freed up to store lots of new crafty goodness.
owl is looking very inquisitive, and your framed eskimo piece is lovely!

Hugs back Nanette Cross stitching is really is hard on the eyes…I have to have the right light and the right glasses on to work it. I think my daughter is really going to be surprised and love the gift. Excited for her to open it but she has to wait 🙂

The owl is adorable! I agree, I think the darker backstitch around the face give him a little more depth. The framed piece turned out lovely as well!

The expression on the owl made me smile! And I love the graduations in his feathers. That must have been very tricky to sew. I think you were right to take out the backstitching around the flower. It will be good to see the next instalment. (Maybe then we will hear how your daughter loved your present.)

Thank you Anne – It is always great to get confirmation on what your doing. Glad you agree on the flower. I got very lost stitching the feathers and there are quite a few ‘errors’ in following the pattern/colors but I winged it and went for it and thought – all birds have different coloring and mine is different from the original and that’s ok 🙂

It must’ve been really fun, to do that stitching and see that sweet owl face emerge! The head tilt is so cute. Does your daughter not read your blog? I have this idea of her reading each post and giggling, knowing what she’s going tor receive but not telling you!

Actually I have worried about that and I did check. She doesn’t seem to be following so I think I am safe. But she could be giggling behind my back and I just don’t know. 🙂 I’ll find out soon!

The owl is darling! I’ve made a similar error with the number of strands and made the same decision you did – to leave it alone. 😉 I’ve finished a gift for my daughter and her family recently too. It’s doubtful she reads my blog but I’m not taking any chances so everyone will have to wait to see it in December!

You are smart – I took the chance and if she has followed along she is keeping quiet and having a good laugh on mom. Glad I left it alone too – pulling out the flower backstitch alone was a chore 🙂

Both of these are beautiful – lucky daughter! I love the owl. I didn’t realize he would be so whimsical, but I like the slightly heavier stitching on his head.

Thank you Susan – In the beginning I didn’t see the whimsical side to the owl now after being pointed out a few times – I see it in fact maybe owls are whimsical all together 🙂

The owl and the cactus look great. And if you just backstitch the whole owl with 2 strands nobody will know it was not part of the plan
