At our last posting for the SAL, I had just barely started a new cross stitch project I am calling Country Snowman. It’s a Dimensions kit – The Gold Collection – Petites. Their title is Snowman & Reindeer.
I’ve got a nice start to this project. Here is where I am now

Please note this SAL is not accepting any more new members until further notice but this is what it’s all about anyway. This SAL (Stitch Along) is slightly different to other SALs in that we don’t all stitch the same design at the same rate. We choose ONE unfinished project, or ONE new one, and show progress of its completion over a series of three weekly updates. There are no deadlines and no set amount to stitch. The result is that the space in our drawers full of WIPs (works in progress) is gradually being freed up to store lots of new crafty goodness. It’s surprising how much motivation I’ve gained from being in this SAL.
I have a number of options to choose from for my new project. You may remember from our last posting I had completed my Tori’s Quilt.
I just started hand quilting another panel piece from the Hoffman Collection ‘Dream Big Holiday’ and thought I might use this for my next project.
backing material
This will stitch up rather quickly and won’t be much of a challenge to complete. What I really wanted was something that would require staying power and the encouragement and accountability of our quilt along to get the job done. I have the tulip quilt top, a Goodwill find from some years back but I still haven’t gotten out to find the perfect backing material and then I remembered the gifted quilt top I received in May quite by surprise.
Quilt top by Jane Ina Rogers nee Eyers b. 27 Dec 1909 Phoenix, AZ passed 6 Dec 1996 Yucca Valley, CA. This was sent to me by her granddaughter Raeleen.
I need some help in identifying the quilt pattern. I believe this is some kind of variegated log cabin pattern. Would it have some specific pattern name?
Still not able to get out to a fabric store, I turned to my stash. I decided that I would fashion a quilt backing out of what I have on my shelves. I knew I wouldn’t have one piece large enough but my wheels were turning and I was up at 4 am on Monday and sewing together odds to make one large sheet.
Using 5 different pattered fabrics, I machine stitched the fabrics together. The lighting was not the best for the photo, the cranberries coordinate nicely and while the blues are off – I think it will be fine. My next step was into the washing machine for a gentle washing, a pressing and then to sandwich it together. This proved a bit difficult as it is quite large, between a queen/king size and I have no flat space for a project like this. As you can see from the picture above it is draped over a queen size bed. So for this posting I am all put together and ready to start hand quilting this. It would be amazing if I could get her done this year but I am not setting any deadlines or expectations. A new year and a new project. At our last posting I had finished my Skating Santa and was ready to start my new project only to discover the directions were not for my kit but for another. I planned on doing those cute Christmas owls and got the directions for the cute Halloween owls instead. It never occurred to me that I could solve this by simply stitching the Halloween owls instead. It took Avis to mention in a reply that I could do that, funny, that was a thought that never entered my mind. Then there was the problem with the floss which would all have to be changed if I decided to do the Halloween owls. I had already ordered a new kit and not a Joy Sunday project. (which I would not recommend)
I decided I had no desire to change out the floss after having had to do that with the other because of poor quality of the floss. So instead I will be working this adorable snowman Dimensions kit.
Directions and all prepped to start.
Not much done, just a mini start and I am ready to tackle this for the new year.
Now I am off to check in with the others in this SAL and see what everyone is up to. Won’t you join me?
