SAL: Trick Or Treat Update

Three weeks flew by once again. It was June of 2020 that I began this Trick Or Treat cross stitch project. It was a kit by The Victorian Sampler, original design by Thea Dueck. I ran into immediate trouble with the directions. In fact, I am not even sure I had all the directions now as this was a kit purchased second hand at the Goodwill. There were design elements I had not anticipated, the addition of beads, and metallic threads, Hardanger, and my wrong choice of back ground cloth (the white ghost are invisible), even some needle point elements. But once begun I decided to see her through and make her my own. I tweaked much of the design, added more trees and leaves to the trees, color choices, borders similar but different.

For this 3 three week update I am calling Trick or Treat finished. She was a fun project but I am glad to call her done!

I will frame her with 2 mats, like the original on the photo cover. A thin orange border on black with a black frame.

For my next project I picked a very simple kit purchased off of Amazon. I needed something less fussy and straight forward. I also thought this would make a lovely gift project, I have a friend in mind.

Also in the world of cross stitch, I have begun another Christmas Card series for 2021 and completed a 1st card. I really feel like these are the perfect card for someone you want to acknowledge as special in your life without gift buying during the holiday season.

Have a wonderful next three weeks and I am off to visit the pages of the others in this SAL at the links posted below.

SAL: Trick Or Treat Update #11

At my last posting I had almost finished adding the row of houses for trick or treaters to walk down. It looked like this below ~ houses in outer space 🙂

I have been working pretty consistently these past three weeks. Here is where I am today.

I am still planning on adding a bit more in the area above the kids. I am not sure what but it looks a bit bare. Perhaps another bat, a moon? Any ideas?

SAL: Trick Or Treat Update

Here we are at the end of another year and another three week check in on our project. I have continued working pretty steadily even with other holiday projects needing completion. ‘Perry’ has been my faithful companion as I work. Setting the time each day has really been helpful in getting this project worked on.

You may remember my last posting with the start of trick or treaters walking down the street. It certainly seemed odd to me. At first glance I realized my choice of aida cloth color was wrong. The white simply was lost. In fact after a good start I was disappointed with the over all choice from the get go. But that was behind me. Now what the heck was wrong with these kids out for treats besides the white thread being lost?

Of course, I had skipped a step, the row of homes came first. So out came the stitches, thankfully not too many of them and I started on the houses.

Here is where I am now. Much better 🙂

I need one more home, I need to add some more greenery (shrubs), perhaps a tree between the orange and red house or another home. I was thinking a bat and I’ll be ready to start on the kids. I was also thinking about putting this project into a ‘tea’ bath when I am done to darken the cloth. I am just feeling as this progresses that the cloth is all wrong. It should be dark and gloomy/spooky. Does anyone have any thoughts on that or an idea what I could use or do?

The year has come to an end. Our three week check ins have helped make this year seem to go by so quickly. Good riddens to 2020, I am not sad to see you end. I have accomplished so much with the encouragement of the group. It’s been so much fun to follow you all. You’ve not only encouraged me but inspired me.

About the SAL

Please note this SAL is not accepting any more new members until further notice but this is what it’s all about anyway. This SAL (Stitch Along) is slightly different to other SALs in that we don’t all stitch the same design at the same rate. We choose ONE unfinished project, or ONE new one, and show progress of its completion over a series of three weekly updates. There are no deadlines and no set amount to stitch. The result is that the space in our drawers full of WIPs (works in progress) is gradually being freed up to store lots of new crafty goodness. It’s surprising how much motivation I’ve gained from being in this SAL.

SAL: Trick Or Treat update #9

Three weeks has never gone by faster. Thanksgiving has come and the holidays are ahead of us. We will have one more post and then welcome 2021…how can this be possible?

Here is where I was at our last posting

I finished section 2 with Perry Mason my faithful tv companion.

I started on section 3, and true to this project, confusion reigned. I kept looking at my work, thinking something is not right. Progressing I could see that the background cloth color was crucial in choosing. A darker color was needed for the ghosts to show up but that wasn’t what was wrong.

After starting the row of trick or treaters, I realized I had skipped the background, a row of wonderful houses to trick or treat at. Thankfully I hadn’t worked to many of the costumed cuties. Now I need to remove them and start over.

The Halloween cross stitch is not the only project I have been working on. My time has been shared with cross stitch Christmas Cards. I have shown these outside of this SAL posting but thought so close to the holidays I needed to add some cheer along with Halloween. Here are a few of my favorites that will be sent out to special friends this week.

Below are the links to the others participating in this SAL. Please stop by and visit their pages ~ there is some amazing projects in the works.

SAL: Trick Or Treat update #8

I have been working on “Trick or Treat” an original design by Thea Dueck for The Victorian Sampler

At our last posting on Oct 25th, I had shared the photo below of my progress. I added the witch/farmer, leaf basket and line.

I wasn’t happy with the start to section 2 and took a really good look at the cover photo and way to complicated and confusing directions. I had zoomed in and enlarges the cover photo which gave me a clearer peak at what was going on. You may remember I decided I was going to remove what I had done and start over. I am so glad I did ~ what a difference.

There’s a lot of improvising and tweaking going on with the colors and pattern. I am using the directions and cover photo only as a guide. I moved the second tree and pumpkins over and will be adding another cat and bat into this section, pumpkins and trees. I also adopted a new crafting routine this 3 week period spending 1 hour M -F while watching Perry Mason from 9 – 10 am each day. Who doesn’t like a Merry Mason ala cross stitch 🙂

Now off to do some blog hopping!

SAL: Trick Or Treat Update #7

Here we are at the three week check in. It’s a timely check in for this Trick or Treat project. Here is where I was last time.

For my progress on this update notice I added an additional bottom row to the section one before getting started on the second section.

This project has been a real challenge for me. It’s been extremely difficult to follow the directions and match colors to the suggested floss. I have taken some liberty in making this my own {Halloween nightmare} I have been referring back to the cover photo on the package insert for color guidance but while writing this I had the idea to take the cover picture I had and crop it to show you some of the changes I have made. I am so glad I did because it really gave me a great view, a real eye opener, of what I was looking at. I have decided I will be removing it all and be starting the whole section again after seeing this view below.

Now it’s off to take a look at what everyone else has been working on, please join me. We live all over the world so you may need to allow for time differences. Posting takes place every third Sunday, local time. Our next update will be on the 15th of November.
