How does three weeks go by so quickly? It has and here we are with another posting for the HQAL.
It seems like forever since I have been working on the individual ‘T’ blocks. I finally decided to stop and take a look at what I had.
Spread out on a queen size bed, not convinced this will be the lay out but it has given me a good idea on whats going on. I am going to stop making blocks and put this baby together.
I have to say I am not thrilled with the multi colored blocks. My original vision was so different but they’re done now. So on to deciding what I want to do with the sashing.
My thought was because they are so uniquely different a frame of black may be what’s called for. A dark brown? A solid dark wood grain fabric? I think a light color is totally out, am I wrong? I just feel because there is no real rhyme or rhythm to these blocks, I needed to isolate them and make them feel individual.
Color, ideas welcome please 🙂
I also made another small pillow using the scraps from one of the last blocks. I backed it with a beautiful section from a vintage table runner, edged with a string of pearls I thought was just perfect with the red dotted material.

I don’t think I would use light colored borders, probably brown or wood grained. Great pillow!

First thing – move the 4 dark blocks to the corners. Like a blue top left and a deep mauve to top right and then the blue to the bottom right and the deep mauve to the bottom corner left. Then you will be able to re-arrange the others accordingly! Then try the 4 darker remaining blocks to the center and move the lights on the outside. MAKE any sense?
Black sashings and all around the quilt to stop all the movement, then select another color for the last border.
Look for something for a border that will compliment all blocks. After you have the sashings and the 1″ around the entire top you will know what to use for the last border!
Did I say something that made sense???????????????? LOL Breakfast time.
PS – I like the blocks! Love those little pillows – what size are they – They are beautiful!

Nanette and I see these the same way. I see burgandy for that one background, though. =) You have 4 very dark blocks for the corners, 4 medium dark ones to put in the center, and then the others are mediums and lights which can go on the outsides between the darkest corners. Did I explain that well enough? Try it and see what you think. Then you can look at sashing with a better eye. And maybe not sashing between every block, but around the four middle ones, and around the dark ones, so it sort of makes a tic-tac-toe design on the top. That could work. Play with them some more. =)

You are in great shape now, and I am excited to see the final layout! You will always remember this quilt because it was your first! It is going to look fabulous in its final form!

Hi Kathy ~ I certainly will remembering this quilt but not as my first but for the one I was not so happy with 🙂 You may have me confused but I have I made quite a few quilts over the years, all hand stitched too. I’ll try and send you a few pictures privately which might remind you 🙂 BUT I am excited to see a final lay out to with the ideas from Nanette and Susan 🙂

I think I got confused sometime during Bella’s T block QAL. I bet you said it was your first T block, and it got in my head it was your first quilt.😂 Now I need to fire up email and enjoy your quilt show!

I have to admit, when I saw these blocks along the way, I wasn’t sure how they’d work together. But now I can see that they’ll be fine–lots of energy, just like a scrappy quilt of days gone by! I do like the idea of a very dark solid for the sashing and border–it’s a busy quilt, visually, and black or a very dark navy (no wood grain!!) would give the eyes a place to rest.

Wood grain is out. Great idea for dark navy, I hadn’t thought of that. Lots of energy for sure but perhaps too much. For now I will soldier on 🙂
